Woman dies in blaze

Feb 23 2004

By James Cartledge

A woman was killed and two other people were injured in a fire at a family home today .

Fire crews found the 32-year-old woman's body on the ground floor of a detached house in Mount Street, Hednesford, after the blaze ripped through the property at around 2.45am. A second woman aged 60 was rescued by firefighters and was in a critical condition in hospital.

A man of around the same age was understood to have escaped himself and suffered smoke inhalation. Paramedics were on the scene within eight minutes of being alerted and treated both patients before they were rushed to Staffordshire General Hospital.

The blaze began in the kitchen but the cause was not yet clear and was being investigated by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

It would not say whether smoke alarms were fitted inside the property.

Sgt Tim Jones, of Staffordshire Police, said the dead woman, who has not yet been named, and the two other people inside the address were believed to have been related.

He said the fire was not being treated as suspicious. "Our scenes of crime officers will be going to the scene with fire service investigators to find out exactly what happened," he said.

"The woman has not yet been identified but we believe all three people involved were related."

The tragedy is the second fire death in Hednesford in just over a month. Pensioner Derek Wyke died in a blaze at his home in nearby Bradford Street on January 21.
