Buses get the hump

Oct 25 2002

By David Bell, Evening Mail

Proposals to carpet two busy roads with jumbo-sized speed humps have been dropped after Travel West Midlands warned city transport chiefs: "We'll take our buses away."

They have now been forced to instal mini-cushions in the £200,000 package of safety projects for Reddicap Heath Road, in Sutton Coldfield, and Quinton Road West.

Seven bus routes run along the two roads - the 004, 103, 443, and 630 in Quinton, and the 915, 115, and 104A in Sutton.

Travel West Midlands objected to the jumbo humps because it uses low-floor buses.

A spokesman said: "Damage to these buses has occurred elsewhere and we would have had to consider withdrawing the vehicles if the speed humps were not lowered." The package of 60mm mini-cushions, double yellow lines and built-out kerbs has been financed by special Government grants.

Council engineers said the mini-humps were not as effective at reducing vehicle speeds, but were optimistic that the measures would keep drivers down to 30mph on the raods, which have a high accident rate.
