Caution for mum who ditched tot

Feb 25 2004

A mother who abandoned her baby in a shopping centre has received a police caution, it emerged today.

The woman, who has not been named, was traced in December last year, more than two months after the child was found dumped in a toilet block at Kidderminster's Rowland Hill shopping complex.

The baby was named Isobel by staff at Kidderminster General Hospital after her discovery on October 10.

Detective Inspector Adrian Todd, of West Mercia Police, said: "Once we found Isobel's mother and interviewed her we handed the case over to the Crown Prosecution Service for them to assess whether she would face prosecution or not.

"A number of factors were taken into consideration before making the decision, and on their advice she was given a formal caution.

"The case generated a great deal of media interest and I would like to thank all the journalists and media outlets for their help and support.

"The coverage over the weeks following the discovery of baby Isobel certainly contributed towards her mother being located."
