Inquest due into budding star's death

Mar 3 2004

An inquest into the death of promising Midland footballer Jimmy Davis was being held today.

The 21-year-old Manchester United and England under-21 forward was killed in a crash when his BMW 3-series collided with a lorry on the M40 in Oxfordshire last August.

Some 500 people attended his funeral in Worcestershire last year including United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and star players such as David Beckham and Ruud Van Niestelrooy.

Sir Alex described him as "a player with real potential and great promise".

Bromsgrove-born Davis joined United as a trainee in 1999 and made his first team debut in 2001 in the Worthington Cup against Arsenal.

He was on a season-long loan to Division One Watford when he died in the early-hours crash.

The side cancelled their opening game against Coventry City after the tragedy.

He had also been loaned to Swindon the previous season where he scored a number of goals and became a popular player among fans.

The inquest was being heard at Oxford Coroner's Court.
