Man found dead in his prison cell

Mar 1 2004

By Staff Reporter, Birmingham Post

An inmate at a top security prison in the Midlands has been discovered dead in his cell, police said yesterday.

The man, who has not been identified, was found dead at Long Lartin prison near Evesham, Worcestershire, at around 7.45am on Saturday. Police would give no details of how he died.

A spokeswoman said: "A prisoner at HMP Long Lartin was discovered dead in his cell at the prison at 0745.

"An investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is under way. A Home Office pathologist will conduct a post-mortem examination, full details of the deceased will be released once next of kin have been notified."

The death is the latest in Midland prisons in the last year.

Three months ago The Howard League for Penal Reform said Worcestershire's Blakenhurst Prison's five deaths in a year gave it the worst suicide rate in the country, with Birmingham Prison in Winson Green coming second, with four.

An inmate was found dead in Gloucester Prison, the Prison Service said yesterday.

Richard Anthony, aged 37, was found hanged in his cell at the prison at 4.15pm on Saturday, a spokesman said.

Mr Anthony was on remand on drugs charges.

The coroner has been informed and a Prison Service investigation is under way.
