Phone scam warning

Mar 4 2004

Residents in north Worcestershire have been warned about the latest scam in which the fraudsters pretend they are offering cheap phone calls on behalf of BT.

The ruse was exposed when a Bromsgrove man received two calls from different sales reps claiming to be from BT who asked for his bank details.

When the Stoke Prior householder made a check call to BT, he established the cut-price service they were offering did not exist.

A West Mercia Constabulary spokesman said: "We would remind people to think carefully before agreeing to any goods or services from unsolicited phone calls and to be especially cautious when asked for bank details."
