Workers swamped

Dec 2 2003

By Chris Morley, Evening Mail

New technology is allowing firms to send their workers out from the office - but the ease of sending information to them is swamping their time, new research revealed.

Now, a new breed of TSARs workers - Technology Savvy and Remote - has emerged in the modern business who spend as much time working at home or on the road.

Evidence from Mitel Networks shows that half of West Midlands companies now require their staff to work either remotely or from the car.

That is mainly because a fifth of all employees now spend more than five working hours a week on the road, with ten per cent up to 15 hours a week in the car. But while better mobile communications was a boon for managers, staff complained that access to multiple communication channels such as SMS, email and voicemail was making their jobs more stressful.

Many employees said they were more likely to waste time fending off cold calls and responding to emails than doing more productive work.

Graham Bevington, of Mitel, said: "Business people today are inundated with technology hardware.

"In many cases the user actually becomes less productive because they are unable to make all of these pieces of hardware work together."
