Site search under way as recycling gathers momentum

Apr 1 2003

Plans for an urban recycling business park are being explored by Birmingham City Council.

Working together with Urban Mines, a not-for-profit body seeking recycling solutions, Tyseley Waste Disposal and Onyx, a fact-finding mission has been launched to establish feasibility.

The aim is to explore the potential for increased business activity on the back of recycling.

Drawing together activity in the form of an urban recycling park is just one of a number of initiatives being explored by the council.

A spokesman said: "We are looking at whether such a park could be created in the future.

"Some of the problems we face are finding a site with all the requirements.

"Tyseley is being looked at, and the site we eventually identify will need to have good transport links as one of the main issues is effective movement of waste by road, rail and canal.

"The idea is to bring waste to one location, but behind that is the need for understanding waste streams and exploring business start-up opportunities."

It is hoped that a recycling park would lead to business diversification in the environmental sector, with core industries branching out into providing recycling services and linking with other businesses.

Urban Mines is a not-for-profit environmental body seeking solutions for waste materials by working with the public and private sectors.

Its model for a sustainable growth park utilises resources traditionally viewed as waste and prioritises recycling and reuse of materials.

By locating activity on one site, companies can benefit from specialist knowledge, training and facilities, and research can also be carried out.
