Carew saves Villa blushes

15:45, Mar 20 2010

John Carew salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw for Champions League-chasing Aston Villa after Mick McCarthy's Wolves side had threatened to pull of a shock win in the derby meeting at Villa Park.

Wolves looked set for their first win over Villa for 30 years after Jody Craddock's equaliser and James Milner's own goal had put them in front.

But Carew followed up his opener with his 13th goal of the campaign with only seven minutes remaining.

Carew and Milner threatened for Villa early on before the former opened the scoring in the 17th minute, turning home Ashley Young's low left-wing cross from close range.

Wolves responded well and Matt Jarvis saw a curling 20-yard effort deflect narrowly wide before they drew level in the 23rd minute.

David Jones played a free-kick into the danger area and, although Ronald Zubar failed to make proper contact with his shot, Craddock was in the right position to beat Brad Friedel from close range.

Villa were now finding it more difficult to break down their opponents and after 39 minutes they fell behind to an own goal from Milner, who inadvertently turned Jarvis' cross beyond Friedel.

Stewart Downing could have equalised shortly before the interval but saw his downward header from Young's cross bounce up and over the crossbar.

Villa dominated territorially after the break but found it difficult to break down a spirited visiting defence. However, with seven minutes remaining, Carew struck for the second time to bring Villa level.

Emile Heskey's flick-on found Steve Sidwell and his low shot was deflected past Marcus Hahnemann by the Norwegian international.
