Robbie's going nowhere

Jul 26 2003

By Colin Tattum, Evening Mail

Steve Bruce today denied that Wales star Robbie Savage could be on his way to Everton.

Rumours have been circulating here in Kuala Lumpur and on Merseyside that Everton manager David Moyes has turned his attentions to the Blues player-of-the-year and fans' favourite.

Bruce admitted that he and Moyes have spoken, but Savage was not on the agenda.

Intriguingly, Everton were Blues' rivals for Savage's signature a year ago following Leicester City's relegation but could then not afford the initial £1.2million fee and wages.

Now Moyes is in a position to spend and strengthen his mid-field, which could be hit by the loss of Li Tie.

He has already failed in a bid to sign Fulham's Sean Davis and was also linked with new Blues recruit David Dunn before his record £5.5million switch from Blackburn Rovers to St Andrew's.

"I did speak to David Moyes a few days before we came out here, but Robbie wasn't mentioned in the conversation," insisted Bruce.

The manager is looking for Savage and Dunn to form a strong alliance in his midfield this season.

And if Moyes does decide to test Blues' resolve it would be a big decision for Bruce to let Savage go, especially with Aliou Cisse's future so clouded.

Blues are taking a leaf out of Paula Radcliffe's book in a bid to combat the oppressive heat in Malaysia.

After today's Asia Cup third-place play-off against the hosts, players will be plunged - for a minimum of 60 seconds - into baths filled with ice.

The team's sport scientist John Brierley explained: "The lads get very tired, very hot and if they stop exercising straight away it affects their blood and waste products cannot get out of their system.

"Having an icy bath helps their circulation, muscles and aids recovery. It's a commong thing among athletes and rugby players; Paula Radcliffe swears by them."

Meanwhile, Tom Williams is attracting the interest of Millwall's Mark McGhee.

The Lions boss is keen to take the left-back, who spent last season on loan at QPR.
