Baggies in pay row

Jul 26 2002

The Mirror

West Brom players are angry that a proposed £15,000-a-win bonus has been scrapped in favour of a £50,000 one-off payment if they survive in the Premiership.

A source close to the squad said: "Everybody is very unhappy. Nobody is being greedy here.

"They just want their proper rewards for doing so well. But the club's stance seems to be that this matter is non-negotiable."

But manager Gary Megson, whose pay has just doubled to £10,000 a week, has clamped down on any dissent.

He said: "Nobody is going to get rich at West Brom's expense. If the club does well, the players will. If not, not."

"The bonus scheme suggested by the previous regime at the Hawthorns was unworkable, so it has been supplanted by a scheme loaded at the back end.

"We don't intend to hand the players massive bonuses during the season, then find we haven't succeeded in our main aim of staying in the Premiership."
