Giles returns

May 11 2004

Ashley Giles will start his first - and possibly only - championship game of the season for Warwickshire when they face Surrey at Edgbaston starting tomorrow.

And the England spinner will join a team aiming to complete a compelling double over the star-laden London county after they handed them a 45-run Totesport League beating on Sunday.

That win, on the back of an expected but still professionaldispatchof Shropshire in the C&G Trophy, has set the Bears' season in motion after a badly rain-affected start.

Captain Nick Knight's men are on the move. But against a Surrey side brimming with internationals - and no doubt stung by Sunday's reverse - the captain knows his team must hit similar heights in all departments of the game if they are to record their first four-day win of the summer.

"To beat such a powerful side was very pleasing," Knight said.

"It was a really good team performance.

"The batters posted a total some 40 or 50 above par. Then we took early wickets and Jonathan Trott's two catches to get rid of the openers shouldn't be overlooked.

"I have been saying thatweneedsomething to spark us off and people usually look to batsmen or bowlers for that spark. But those catches were inspirational.

"Now we've got to keep it going. We're got a couple of wins under our belts but let's not get carried away. It won't be a disaster if we don't beat Surrey - they've got some terrific play-ers. So long as we keep moving in the right direction."

A decision on who will make way for Giles will be taken after the conditions have been examined tomorrow. Brad Hogg could be left out but, with the strip having been played on twice already in the last five days, the Bears might go on with two spinners at the expense of a batsman.
