Revitalised Carter gets top Birmingham Post award

Sep 26 2005

By George Dobell, Chief Cricket Writer

Neil Carter was last night awarded the first Birmingham Post Player Of The Season Award in association with Shakespeares solicitors.

Carter, who polled more than a third of the votes, was presented with the Jack Bannister Trophy by Warwickshire and Post stalwart, Bannister at the club's end of season reception.

"This is a real honour to be recognised by the supporters of the club," said Carter. "I was delighted so many people had voted for me."

The 30- year- old allrounder, who made his club debut in 2001, has enjoyed the best season of his career.

He claimed 94 wickets in all competitions, as well as scoring over 1,000 runs and winning his county cap.

Yet it was surely his obvious commitment to the team cause that made him such an overwhelming choice. Carter has given his all throughout the year, turning round his Warwickshire career. While last September, Warwickshire were initially reluctant to offer him a new contract, he finishes this season an integral part of the club's plans for the future.

For Carter had another good reason to celebrate last night. He signed a new twoyear contract with the club yesterday, ending speculation that he would leave. Northamptonshire, Middlesex and Surrey were among the clubs to have made formal approaches for him.

Nick Knight was second in the voting. The only Warwickshire man to register 1,000 Championship runs this summer, Knight made nine centuries in all competitions and captained the team with distinction. Jonathan Trott was third.
