When jokes go wrong

Jan 28 2005

Villa boss David O'Leary today admitted he was "just kidding" about signing new players during the transfer window.

In an interview invented by Row Z today, the manager said rumours of incoming transfers were "a joke that got out of hand."

"Rumours of incoming transfers are a joke that got out of hand," said O'Leary in an interview which never actually happened.

"I was having a bit of a laugh and a joke with Roy Aitken at training one day and I suddenly thought, 'Wouldn't it be hilarious to tell everyone we'd be signing three or four players?'.

"It never occurred to me that anyone would take it seriously, but if it's upset some sections of the support then, of course, I'm sorry.

"Now, pull my finger."
