In the spotlight: Alpay

May 29 2003

Leading figures from each of our five West Midlands football clubs have agreed to answer the questions of Row Z readers.*

Alpay

This week it's the turn of Aston Villa's Turkish international Alpay Ozalan to take his place in the hotseat:

Will you be playing for Villa next season? Colin, Shirley

AO: I don't know Colin. There are so many balls in the air at the moment that even someone with my aerial ability can't handle them all! All I will say is that I've always loved the Villa fans and I don't mind slumming it for one more season if I really have to.

After the World Cup you had the world at your feet; Turkey finished an excellent third and you were named in the 'team of the tournament'. Where did it all go wrong? Tanya, Oldbury

AO: I don't want to get anyone in trouble, or be disrespectful to anyone, Tanya. But true genius intimidates some people. That's all I'll say.

Do you feel guilty about receiving a wage from a club you haven't played for for months? Janet, Kings Heath

AO: You know it breaks my heart when fans like Janet ask questions like that. Everything I do is for the fans. I love the fans. I'd be right there on the terraces with them if it wasn't for the fact I have to work from home on Saturdays. I often buy a catering size packet of Bourbon Cremes in case the fans pop round to my house after a match. That's how much I love the fans.

Is David O'Leary a man you can do business with? Chris, West Bromwich

AO: As I've said before, David O'Leary is a good manager but if he's made one big mistake - and he has, Chris - it's that he didn't at least try and sign me when he was manager of Leeds. I'm not sure I'd have said yes, but it would have been nice to be asked.

Do you enjoy living in England? Roger, Dorridge

AO: Yes. When I drive through the streets of Aston on my way to the ground I often ask myself, 'could I really give all this up?'. I really shouldn't say anything, because I don't want to break any confidences, but I know for a fact that a certain club who've just won the Champions' League were all set to sign me but knew I'd find it difficult to leave Birmingham behind - and, of course, the wonderful Villa fans.]

Who, in your opinion, is the best defender in the world? Bill, Birmingham

AO: Aaah, c'mon now Bill! I think we all know that modesty prevents me from answering that question, don't we?

Why don't you just **** off, you workshy ******* *****? DR, Birmingham

AO: Ha ha ha! You English and your sense of humour! I will never understand it!

That's all we've got time for. Thank you Alpay.

* Or, to put it another way, no they haven't. We've made the whole thing up.
