Leading figures from the world of football have agreed to answer the questions of Row Z readers.*
This week it's the turn of former Villa legend - and Walsall transfer target - Paul Merson to take his place in the hotseat: What's the story Paul? Are you signing for Walsall? Julie, Walsall PM: We're discussing it at the moment, Julie. Row Z: What's the big attraction with Walsall? PM: It's an opportunity that really excites me. Not least because of ease of access. I reckon it's only a 16 minute drive to the ground from my house in Sutton Coldfield. Basically, if I take the B4149 up to Kingstanding, then get on to the A4041 and then up the A34, I'm going to make good time - and I do mean good time - maybe as little as 16 minutes. The AA Routeplanner says it should take 18 minutes, but I do drive a BMW. So, as I said, it's an exciting opportunity. You're a seasoned veteran now Paul. Is the hunger still there? Dan, Wednesbury PM: Well let me ask you this, Dan. If the hunger wasn't still there, would I be turning down the chance to play for Porstmouth in the Premiership so that I could play for Walsall? Walsall have got a 'player trade' deal with Manchester United. Do you think you might be in line for a mid-season move to Old Trafford if you sign for the Saddlers!? Jon, Birmingham PM: I certainly hope not Jon. I reckon it's a good hour and a half drive to Old Trafford from Sutton Coldfield, and that's before you start worrying about roadworks etc. on the M6, especially round Holmes Chapel. Mind you, you could go A51/A50. Yes, that might just work... What about Derby, Merse? Up the A38, on to the A516 then round to the A601. Simple as pie. Norman, Kingswinford. PM: Yeah, nice one Norman. I might look into that. Oi! Norman! Why don't you just naff off and let him make his own mind up? Colin, Walsall. PM: He was just making a suggestion Colin... You seemed to leave Villa Park under something of a cloud. How was your relationship with Graham Taylor? Juan Pablo, Sutton Coldfield PM: Graham Taylor is a real gentleman and a football man through and through. But sometimes I felt his management lacked direction. For example, on an away trip to Liverpool he insisted on going up the M56 and through the Mersey Tunnel rather than just staying on the M6 and cutting across the M62. It just didn't make sense. As a confirmed cinema fan, Paul, do you see much future for the conventional blockbuster? Leon, Worcester. PM: Well, it's an interesting one. Obviously the massive geo-political upheaval we've seen in the last couple of years has made it increasingly difficult for cinema - and the traditional 'blockbuster' in particular - to remain relevant. I honestly believe a reappraisal of the genre is essential if it is to survive in the 21st century. If you were given the chance to make one film, what would it be about? Marty, New York PM: I would make a motion picture about one man's struggle to commute to and from his place of work without irritation. Row Z: That's all we've got time for. Thank you, Paul Merson. |
