Leading figures from West Midlands football have agreed to answer the questions of Row Z readers.*
This week it's the turn of Wolves boss Glenn Hoddle to take his turn in the hotseat. Welcome to Wolves, Glenn! What convinced you do take the job? Rosie, Cannock. GH: "Hi Rosie. Why did I come to Wolves... well, simple, really. I found myself in a situation where my situation and Wolves's situation were well suited to each other, in terms of, y'know, helping each other out of a situation. So it was all about circumstances and the right situation, y'know, to be honest." Are you impressed with the squad you've inherited? Sam, Gornal GH: "Well it's not really a situation where I can be, y'know, impressed or not impressed - unimpressed is another word for it. "The circumstances are that, y'know, we're all in this situation and we've got to just try and deal with the circumstances." You were strongly tipped to take over at West Brom? So how have you ended up at Molineux? Gary, Sheffield GH: "Well, y'know, I did talk - not officially, more like kind of unofficially - about the situation at The Hawthorns and whether it was a case of our circumstances being right for each other in that situation but, y'know, the situation is that the circumstances weren't." You've made some fairly dramatic changes to the playing style at Wolves. Were you concerned the players couldn't adapt to your methods? Arsene, Islington. GH: "It's not a case of, y'know, adapt. It's simply, well, it's like, y'know, there's the circumstances, this is our situation, y'know, let's deal with it. "At the moment I've got the boys playing in the 3-1-2-1-2-1-1 formation and it seems to be like, well, it's working for us. But if circumstances, y'know, change, then I'm sure we'll deal with the situation." You walked out on Southampton for a bigger club. How do we know you won't do the same thing to us? Anne, Cosford GH: "Well, y'know, it's a totally different set of, y'know, circumstances here compared to there. You just can't compare here with there. I've been here and I've been there. And they're, y'know, and it's not like, well, let's just say it's not like there here." Will you have money to spend when the transfer window opens? Richie, Sydney. GH: "When it's a case of money to, y'know, spend, then it's difficult to know what the situation is with that unless you're actually told 'this is the situation' and then, well, then it's just a case of, y'know' get on with it." Don't you think the last manager was magnificent? Dave, Liverpool GH: "Well it's obvious, y'know, that he was a man who managed this club and, y'know, he was in a situation where he had to deal with some circumstances to get out of that situation and then he found himself in a new situation and that was, well, that was a different, y'know, situation, to be honest." Who's the most skillful footballer you've ever seen? Steve, Nottingham. GH: "Well, y'know, me." Do you feel bitter about the way your time as England manager came to an end? Graham, Watford GH: "To be honest, I don't think it terms of, y'know, bitter or not bitter - unbitter I suppose you wouldn't say - about what, well, happened really I suppose is the best way of saying it, because it's happened and that's a set of circumstances that, y'now, don't really come into the current situation." How's your relationship with the Molineux board? Mark, Brighton GH: "Well, y'know, in life you can find situations that are positives and situations that are, well, negative I suppose is what you'd call them. But this situation is positive and, y'know, not negative really. "I suppose, well, really, to be honest, it's because, y'know, they appreciate, well, put it this way - I think they like someone who's a straight-talker." Row Z: That's all we've got time for. Thank you, Glenn. GH: "It's, y'know, well, let's just say it's my pleasure." * No they haven't - we've made the whole thing up. |
