I have been away - and whilst I was away West Brom got promoted. So I guess I should talk about that. Gary Megson... where do you start? Albion were very much like Walsall when he took them over. They were footballing nobodies in a small dingy Black Country town. He has transformed them. He is still doing it.
All that he hasn't done is don some robes and a big stick and parted Bilston Canal and I'll bet he is working on it. In Albion land - Meggo is a legend, and rightly so. But can he bridge the next gap? What will be different this time around?
Albion need to learn from Wolves - and I don't mean play in Orange - one Midland's team doing that is tragic enough. No I mean they need to do the opposite to what Wolves did.
Apart from finding a player like Henri Camara. Anyway you get the gist. They need to spend money and lots of it. Wolves could have bought Teddy Sheringham, Amdy Faye, Patrick Berger, Kevin Phillips, Modeste Mbami, Les Ferdinand and many more. They didn't because they went for the cautious approach. It cost them - and it cost them big (okay they are not even down yet... but we all know they are). Albion need to find a balance between proven top-notch players on big wages and wannabe Premiership stars ready to sweat blood to stay there. Last time around Albion failed to attract anyone who was any good to join them... this time around they have to.
Steve Bruce talked the talk and in walked Robbie Savage... he needed an extra thrust a few months later so Christophe Dugarry came in. Look at Blues now. The main problem Albion have is that they have a big squad of first division players, but only a small proportion of them are of a high enough standard. Are Thomas Gaardsoe, James Chambers, Andy Johnson, Rob Hulse, Lee Hughes, etc etc good enough to play at the highest level week in week out? I say no. Squad players they may be, consistent Premiership players to be relied on they are not. So this is my message to my good mate Meggo - complete overhaul.
Add true strength to each department - if you have to lock yourself in the boardroom with the chairman threatening to smash up his golf clubs then do it. You need £10m. And you need to spend it wisely. P.S. I told you Walsall would go down (they will, trust me) I told you Wolves would go down (again, they will) and I have made a tidy profit on Albion getting promoted! It would be unfair to say that I am always right. Except that I am! |
