Review - Laura's Star (U)

Feb 11 2005

Evening Mail

Laura's Star (U) is a child-friendly animation based on Klaus Baumgart's bestselling book.

Co-directed by German animator Thiol Graf Rothkirch (The Little Polar Bear), it's sweet but relatively charmless and colourful but rather lifeless.

Girls aged under eight, though, will recognise Laura's bedside toys and the central story about friendship sometimes meaning having to let go.

There's also a welcome emphasis on music, both visually and with the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Nick Glennie-Smith.

But, after Racing Stripes' live action animals talked in perfect synch, Laura's Star has characters whose lips can still be moving when they've stopped speaking!

Even Disney never cracked lip-synching with its 2D animations, but this dubbed 80-minute Europudding really struggles in this key department.
