Review - Spongebob Squarepants (U)

Feb 11 2005

Evening Mail

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie (U) is the biggest hoot of the year.

Building on the success of the Nickelodeon TV series, Spongebob is an animated sponge with square trousers.

If he sounds barmy, he is. But it's a lot of fun watching our soapy friend and his associates squeezing in and out of ludicrous situations if he's to rescue King Neptune's crown by heading off into Shell City - from where nobody has ever returned.

Directed by Stephen Hillenburg as a road movie which riffs along like Raiders of the Stolen Crown, this is a constantly inventive 87-minute comedy delight for all ages.

It's impossible to second guess, the darkest animation since The Iron Giant and it's even got Motorhead on the soundtrack. Now that's what I call making up for Disney's appalling Atlantis!

Don't miss the ace beginning - or you you'll wonder what on earth a bunch of live action pirates are doing in the movie later.

Or a world famous surprise TV guest star!
