Look who's come to call

Dec 17 2004

By Diane Parkes

JB PRIESTLEY'S timeless classic An Inspector Calls kicks off the new spring season at Birmingham's Repertory Theatre.

The Stephen Daldry production returns to the theatre for two weeks after a sell-out run in Birmingham last year and a West End success.

With 19 international theatre awards in the bag, the National Theatre production features Nicholas Day, Sandra Duncan and David Roper.

Casualty actor and Celebrity Fame Academy contestant Kwame Kwei-Arma is the writer and lead actor in a modern day drama Elmina's Kitchen at the end of February.

It centres on the story of Deli, who is attempting to keep his family happy and his Caribbean cafe a success, but can he face the

temptation of a culture in which the gun rules?

Eileen Atkins and Henry Goodman join the celebrations for Harold Pint-er's The Birthday Party in March. Eileen is the mumsy Meg whose plans for a party come awry with the arrival of two sinister guests including Goldberg, played by Henry.

Roy Williams' new play Little Sweet Thing comes to the theatre in April. It features the story of tough-talking Tash and her reformed prisoner brother Kev, but when the past catches up with them, can they discover a way out?

And Tim Firth's comedy Neville's Island completes the spring season with a sideways look at a team building weekend in the

Lake District when four middle managers are left on a deserted island with night rapidly closing in.

The Rep's studio space The Door also has plenty of new drama next year.

Rani Moorthy's Curry Tales brings us the spicy stories behind the balti dishes, Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters is a coming-of-age story set in Glasgow and Smilin' Through is a bitter sweet family comedy set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles.

Full details of all the Rep's new productions are available from the theatre box office on 0121 236 4455.
