A Rwandan story

Jan 7 2005

By Alison Handley

There's a last chance to catch Helen Wilson's powerful commemoration of the genocide in Rwanda, in Birmingham this month.

Making Sense: A Rwandan Story is at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in Chamberlain Square until January 23, and marks the tenth anniversary of the catastrophe in which over a million people died in just 100 days.

Black British artist Wilson visited the country in 2002 and her resulting eleven, large-scale paintings tell of personal dignity, courage and survival in the face of overwhelming difficulty and tragedy.

The exhibition features both artwork arising from the visit and additional paintings inspired by the Rwandan people Wilson has met since.

It also includes a documentary film about the artist's work, made by award-winning filmmakers Mike Fox and Kate Broome.

* Making Sense: A Rwandan Story runs until Jan 23. Admission is free. For more info, visit www.bmag.org.uk
