Amy's art is widely revered

Jan 21 2005

By Alison Handley

PAINTINGS and sculptures by city artist Amy Middleton will go on display in Birmingham from tomorrow.

'revered or defamed' is being staged in association with St Martins Arts at St Martin-inthe-Bull Ring until March 20. Entry is free.

Amy, aged 23, is the only South African born member of a British family and now lives in Birmingham with her husband, James.

Her work includes monochrome paintings that emphasise the

impersonal nature of modern living. It deals with issues such as technology, the breakdown of the family structure and defiance towards religion.

The paintings combine contemporary imagery with traditional religious symbols.

In contrast, Amy's small, colourful and interactive sculptures are very personal and are an inner reflection of her journey through life so far. Amy, who is

currently working towards a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, says: "My work is as much about the people who encounter it, as is it about artistic skill.

"I hope my work breaks the barriers between art and the general public with its interactive character and personal nature.

"It poses questions about the relevance of God in today's society and it is an investigation into the priorities of contemporary society." * 'revered or defamed' is being staged until March 20. Entry is free.
