Travel art goes solo

Jun 24 2004

THE first solo exhibition in Birmingham of watercolours and other works by Midland artist Margaret Layton will open on Monday.

A total of 55 pictures will go on show at the Gallery of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in St Paul's Square, until July 10.

The paintings for the exhibition stem from Margaret's interpretations of the natural world and are breathtaking in their detail.

Two particularly influential visits - to Norway and Venice - provide the most striking images.

The sweeping ice floes of the Norweigian fjords contrast with the intimacy of the Italian city.

Other pictures include a series of Worcestershire landscapes, plus some

imaginative abstracts.

The selection features watercolour and ink and watercolour and mixed media works.

Margaret, who has a studio in Clows Top on the Worcestershire and Shropshire border, has painted and drawn the Worcestershire countryside since 1968.

Her last solo exhibition was at the London Barbican Centre in 1987.

l The exhibition runs from Monday to Saturday July 10 at the RBSA Gallery, St Paul's Square, Birmingham. The gallery is open from 10.30am-5.30pm, Mon-Fri (until 7pm on Thurs) and from 10.30am-5pm, Sat.
