Santa gets some military helpers to drop in at Birmingham City

By Will Oliphant, Birmingham Mail

SANTA will abseil into St Andrew's tomorrow with three Royal Marines, ahead of Birmingham City's game against Reading.

Colour Sgt Andrew Buckley, aged 37, from Selly Oak, Sgt Martin Yardley, 38, from Corby and Colour Sgt Don Davis, 41, from Kings Norton, will abseil 100ft from the stands accompanied by Father Christmas and mascot Beau Brummie.

The three life-long Blues fans, who are all members of the Royal Marines Commando Display Team, will also help to dish out presents to the crowd.

Birmingham City's new manager, Alex McLeish, will then be welcomed onto the pitch to the sounds of bagpipes from ex-Royal Navy chief petty officer Patrick Grayell.

Colour Sgt Andrew Buckley, a former pupil at the Archbishop Masterson School in West Heath, said: "We're all such big Blues fans, so it's a real honour to help the club celebrate at this special time of year.

"Being here also gives us the opportunity to showcase our other great passion in life, that of being a Royal Marine Commando.

"I just hope we bring the team luck and they win the game."

The three servicemen, based at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, are all green berets and have served at conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
