Lifting the lid on a great gift

They've started already and I can spot them a mile off.

The city is beginning to fill up with head-scratchers looking for the perfect present to bring a smile of delight to a loved one's face this Christmas.

Trouble is, we all know far too many people who are a nightmare to buy for. For a start they have everything they could ever want and, let's face it, who really needs another strangely-shaped olive oil bottle, lavender pomander, or a "beers from around the world" gift set.

So if you want my advice, then the perfect fall-back every time is a hamper. Yes, simple I know, but who wouldn't be over the moon by the site of a large box stuffed to the brim with all their favourite goodies?

The great thing about hampers is they don't have to break the bank so they suit every budget, and you can either do your own or buy one that is already made up. And on top of that, you can pick any theme you fancy.

For the girl who has everything why not fill a stylish box with a host of Crème de la Mer products, for example. I mean, who wouldn't want the gift of great skin this Christmas?

For a guy, you could go over-board with accessories - a stylish Mulberry man bag stuffed with new ties, cufflinks and a watch would bring a lump to the throat of any metrosexual male out there.

Undoubtedly though, the absolute winner is a food and wine hamper - the perfect present to really make someone's mouth water this festive season.

At Harvey Nichols you might be surprised to discover that we do a range of boxed gifts with prices ranging from £22 and luxury food hampers from £35.

And as you'd expect from a store like Harvey Nichols, we also offer some pretty luxurious ones too. Top of my wish list has got to be the ultimate hamper. OK, so it costs £1,500, but it is packed to bursting with a selection of our finest foods, wines, Champagnes and ports as well as sweets and chocolates, El Bulli cookbook and a selection of Wüsthof knives. You'll also find a range of sought-after condiments and kitchen cupboard essentials, including table decorations, lavish kitchenware and cleaning products.

They say that the easiest way to someone's heart is through their stomach. Well, who would argue if they found that lot under the tree next month?
