Alhambra at One Ten

Mark Nash has a variation on the phrase 'square peg in a round hole' - it's 'square door in an curved doorway'.

The proprietor of One Ten bar and restaurant on Colmore Row, Birmingham, was faced with such a challenge when putting together the interior for the venue's private members' bar, Alhambra.

Taking up the top two floors and roof garden, Alhambra is, as the name suggests, modelled on the famous Moorish palace in Granada, Spain - despite the fact that Mark has never actually visited it himself.

"We put the bar together using lots of photographs - I think [visiting] it might ruin it for me now," he jokes.

Using lanterns, cushions, decorative tables and stools, fretwork - and a sumptuous raised bed - the choice of look for Alhambra was a simple one, says the owner:

"The idea was I wanted something that was contemporary and wouldn't date, nothing too modern," he explains.

"The tables and chairs we got from a place in Grantham, the swings [on the roof], the cupboards and bed from London. The doors came from Morocco.

"The whole thing was put together by Tibbetts, who also did the Jam House.

"Re-assembling some of it was a problem," he recalls with a wry smile. "The door which leads to the games room (formerly the cigar room) is a curved doorway - and they sent us a square door - they obviously don't do curves in Morocco!"

Despite any early challenges, Alhambra is now an oasis of calm and opulence, high above the hustle and bustle of the city streets, the roof terrace a hugely popular summer draw for barbecues and get-togethers.

"It's great - we do a lot of parties up there and acoustically it's great for the live music nights we hold," says Mark.

It's also a world away from the derelict shell which had lain empty for seven years before Mark and his team took over the Grade II listed building.

"When we first got here it was a hole, falling apart," he remembers. "One of the reasons we loved it so much was all the original marble that was here - even though you couldn't see some of it for the glue where they'd stuck carpet down over it!"
