Keeping in Rud health

Golden Brown is the name of the new rudbeckia from Unwins and today we’re giving you the chance to try it out for just 50p.

It is a blend of bicolor shades ranging from deep chocolate brown through mahogany to warm orange, with a sprinkling of paler shades to provide contrast.

To claim a trial packet of Rudbeckia Golden Brown, send 50p and a return name and address to Rudbeckia offer, Unwins Seeds Ltd., Mail Order Dept, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire PE13 2RF.

Unwins plant breeder Amanda Smith, who developed the blend, says that although rudbeckias are becoming more popular, they deserve to be more widely grown.

“Rudbeckias always do well whatever sort of summer we have, and they last well into autumn too”, says Amanda.

The uniform, free-branching plants grow to 60cm (24in) and become covered in large blooms each with a prominent central cone. Golden brown looks very effective in massed plantings or as the centre-piece to a bed of dwarf rudbeckias such as Unwins Spotlight or Toto.

While it begins flowering in June, it carries on blooming and remaining fresh-looking until late September or early October.
