Jamelia

Apr 25 2007

By John Perks

Jamelia

She's a singer. A mother. A model. Jamelia could soon be forging a new career as an actress - but one thing she is not is a WAG. She may be engaged to Millwall striker Darren Byfield, but the 26-year-old won't let herself be branded with the WAG tag and all its connotations of trophy wives and girlfriends who spend their time lunching and shopping.

"I hate being called one," she says. "I'm not a WAG, I've never been a WAG; I know plenty of wives and girlfriends who are lovely and nothing like the WAG image.

"I didn't seek out Darren because he's a footballer. I have my own career."

She certainly does have her own career; a decade making music (she was first signed to Parlophone at 15, her first single, So High, released in 1999), Jamelia Niela Davis took a break from music to look after first daughter Teja before her comeback in 2003 with the album Superstar. Since then she's given birth to another girl, Tiani, released a third album, Walk With Me - and modelled for everyone from Jaguar to animal rights campaigners PETA - the latter which required her to pose naked with a rabbit.

Her fabulous figure is not, she insists, the product of countless hours spent down the gym:

"I don't think so somehow!" she laughs. "I don't have the time - it's just down to being so busy. When I want to get away from work I go back to my life as a mum, and when I need a break from life as a mum I can turn back to my work."

Whilst the music career is still very much the bread and butter of Jamelia's career, the girl from Smethwick reveals she could soon be up on the big screen, with a visit to Hollywood pencilled in for next month:

"I've just signed up to an acting agency, so you might see me in a film soon," she reveals. "I would love to be the next Bond girl."

"I'm not trying to take it all too seriously and music will always be my priority," she adds.

Still very much a home girl, Jamelia says she and Darren - a Brummie and former Villa player - try to come to Birmingham as often as possible to see their two families. They both also remain close to their roots, she says.

"We come up as often as we can, though obviously with mine and Darren's families to visit it's hectic to say the least," she says.

"You have to realise there's 24 hours in a day so I've always got time for family and friends even if its just a phone call.

She adds: "We both come from normal working class homes, we both realise we have been given a talent and make the most of it and appreciate it."

Voted third in a recent poll by men's magazine Lycos XY to find Britain's favourite yummy mummy (Anna Friel came first, followed by Victoria Beckham), Jamelia is all too aware of the stresses and strains of being a celebrity mum - demonstrated by her Tears For Spears T-shirt she wore at a recent appearance, her way of showing support for the under-fire Britney Spears: "As a mum I know about the pressures of juggling a music career with raising kids," she says.

"Britney's obviously having a tough time and I hope she pulls it all together."

Happily Jamelia doesn't have such problems - her biggest battle is fielding the barrage of being asked when she and Darren are going to tie the knot:

"It's not top of my list but we'll get round to it soon - both of our mothers would love it to be soon as possible," she laughs.

"[The subject] comes up every week from Teja; it doesn't help that one of my friends is getting married and I'm going to be a bridesmaid - she keeps asking when she can be one!"
