The Fox On The Box

Mar 30 2004

By David Wardale

In the year 2004, The Nation Expects.

The nation expects 27-year-old James Fox to get at least a point.

Just one point, that's all we ask.

And do you know what? He WILL get that point to beat the grand total of Jemini and erase a nation's shame in one fell three and a half minutes of acoustic guitar and cheeky grin swoop.

James Fox Factfile
  • James is currently single.
  • His housemate is fellow Fame Academy reject Alistair.
  • His real name is James Mullet.
  • James claims to have not read a book since the Mister Men.
  • James was on holiday at Ogmore caravan park when Bucks Fizz triumphed in 1981.
  • According to Russell Grant, his astrological chart is similar to Bucks Fizz's.
  • James once supported Liberty X on tour.
  • James thinks that 'Thailand's wicked'.

Will he sing out of tune?

No.

James Fox is a pro. He's finished fifth in Fame Academy, done the cruise ships and performed in front of thousands of wolf whistling squaddies in Bosnia.

Will he win?

Probably not.

The song, Hold On To Our Love, is pleasant enough in a down tempo sing-along-a-chorus kind of way, but it's not silly enough, catchy enough or punchy enough to capture the hearts and minds of the 23 other countries taking part.

That's what the bookies think, anyway, rating the UK at around 20-1 to run off with the prize.

James says he's just honoured to be representing the UK. But he has his ambitions.

"You have got to take it seriously, I would not go there not to perform well.

"I am going with the intention that I want to win it and then we will see what happens.

"We were thinking of putting together all of the gimmicks over the past years and adding them into the act.

"But I'm definitely going to join in with the glitz and the glamour.

"I'm open to anything and you've got to get the crowd excited, but we're not going to go too far. The song is just me and the guitar so it can't be anything too flash. So sorry, but the shirt's going to have to stay on."

Qualifying as the British entry has opened doors for James - he's just finished touring with Lulu and has a record deal with Sony - so the contest itself has been the least of his worries.

"It has not really been at the forefront of my mind, as I've been touring and working on my record.

"At the moment it does not feel real, but I know from speaking to other entrants that it will be a fantastic week."

Let's hope it will be a fantastic week for us all...
