A gay old time!

May 30 2005

By Jane Tyler

Gays and lesbians partied in the sunshine during Birmingham's biggest street festival.

There was a carnival atmosphere in the city's gay quarter when more than 100,000 visitors from across the world descended on the city.

Birmingham Pride is the UK's largest free gay event, bringing in around £10 million to the city's economy.

The event, based around Hurst Street, kicked off on Saturday with a colourful carnival parade.

Yesterday and today revellers enjoyed funfair rides, street entertainers, stalls, dance tents, DJs and live acts.

One of the biggest draws was the "village green" - the car park on Bromsgrove Street and Gooch Street which had been turfed over. Here there was a bouncy castle, gladiator game, jugglers and plate-spinners.

There were also chocolate egg and spoon and three-legged races, handbag hurling, a tug-of-war, a dog show and a children's dressing-up parade.

It is the ninth year the festival, organised by the Birmingham Gay Business Partnership, has been held.

Music was provided in the nearby clubs and bars by chart-toppers Boney M, Bananarama, Liberty X and Michelle Gayle.
