Krysia Rozanka

Krysia Rozanka, chief executive officer, Screen West Midlands, tells us the best places to hang out in Brum.

Describe an average day at work.

Krysia Rozanka

My job is to make sure that film, television, video games and interactive media are a part of life in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

There isn't really a normal day and luckily it is not all office-based. Sometimes it can be attending film festivals like Cannes to talk to producers and directors and convince them to come to the West Midlands, or it can be local events like location launches and premieres. It can be holding meetings and calls with film and TV producers, finding a tricky location for the new Batman film and making sure we get money to help more people make, show, and see films, TV programmes, animations and video games.

I catch up with the Screen West Midlands team who are all running about organising events such as the national documentary weekend in January or film premieres, producing the short films for new film makers and searching for new script writers.

Work usually goes into the evening, including appearances at events, meetings and panels on how to increase media activity in the West Midlands.

Tell us about Screen West Midlands.

If you are hoping to be the next Brit Flick director, want to see your home on the TV or just want to know how to get in to film, TV, video games, interactive media and radio then Screen West Midlands is here to help.

The agency which supports, promotes and develops media in the West Midlands is here to stir up the media melting pot and help us to find media jobs where we live and to see more of the places we recognise on the big and small screen. With some of the work the agency is doing at the moment, the thought of seeing Nicole hanging off the BT tower, Arnie scaling the new Selfridges building or finding the next Spike Lee may not be too far off the mark.

The agency is funded by Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council, The Learning and Skills Council, The UK Film Council and European Regional Development Funding. You can apply for money through our website: www.screenwm.co.uk

Describe the scene in Birmingham to someone who's never been here...

I have lived in lots of cities - Paris, New York, London and LA at different stages of my film career and I really believe Brum is great. It has great places to go - theatres like the REP, bars in Broad Street, The Arcadian or The Mailbox, cinemas UGC, Odeon, IMAX, AMC, museums - Birmingham Museum and Art gallery, The Ikon and of course, lots of shops. But it is so much easier to use than some other cities. There are no smelly tubes, you can walk everywhere and there is always something going on - the Book Festival, Jazz Festival or Arts Fest.

In addition to all this, everyone who has visited me I've taken to the market at St. Martins and they seem really impressed. It is so colourful and really fun to watch.

The other great asset is the Bavarian Market in December, it's so Christmassy in Birmingham.

When you're off duty where do you hang out?

I'm never really off duty, at Screen West Midlands we are really lucky because we get invited to lots of events and screenings so we tend to go out together afterwards to nearby places.

I live in town so when I can, I'm usually shopping (Bullring and the Mailbox are open late) followed by the cinema. After work I like to pop in and see the people around the Custard Factory.

I like Covet's clothes and the people are lovely. Sometimes I'll pop in for a chat and make a wish list from the interiors at Gogo Lounge or buy some flowers from Uber. Griffin Audios are also very sweet and let me listen to their music if I need to chill out.

Best place for a meal?

We had a great meal at Denial in The Mailbox also the Royal Naim on Stratford Road (but there are so many great restaurants to choose from). Bank is another favourite. Anywhere that has good food and a nice atmosphere.

Best bar?

Cocktails at Café Lazeez or Champagne at Epernay in the Mailbox.

Where do you grab a coffee or lunch?

For Coffee For Art at the Custard factory is somewhere I stop off at in the morning. There are always streams of friendly, creative people going through there and you can look at new art they hang on the walls or chatter en Français on a Monday evening at their French conversational classes.

Best place for a boogie?

We love dancing - we always seem to be first ones on the dancefloor and the last to leave. We'll dance anywhere really including The Living Room or The Liquid Lounge and The Jam House.

Best place to get away from it all?

I really enjoy city life so I try not to get away from it all - I guess the places that I like the best are the market or the Sealife Centre.

What do you say to Birmophobes?

Come shopping and dancing with us, it's not the place it was 50 years ago!
