cash rolling in for shopping centres

May 13 2004

Some Birmingham shopping centres will get a boost after council leaders gave the go-ahead for the second round of a multi-million pound funding package.

Birmingham City Council's Cabinet approved a £1.5 million Government grant for improvements to retail centres in Winson Green, Handsworth and Aston.

The cash boost follows a £2.4 million funding package for improvements to Dudley Road, Rookery Road, Soho Hill, Villa/Lozells Road and Witton Road centres, announced last September.

Of the £3.9 million funding, £2.5 million has been secured from the SRB6 North West Corridors of Regeneration programme and £1.4 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

The first phase of the programme resulted in new street lighting at Rookery Road, Lozells/Villa Road, Soho Hill and Witton Road. CCTV columns ready for cameras have also been put up at Rookery Road, Dudley Road and Lozells/Villa Road.

The next phase of work, which will run from 2004 to 2007, will result in more improvements at the centres, and also Birchfield Road.

It will involve new pedestrian crossings, landscaping, new street furniture, parking improvements and CCTV cameras.
