High-fliers struggle to take to the skies

The Heart of England Kite Day

IT was up, up and away for dozens of kites of all shapes and sizes as a Midland town staged an eye-catching aerial display.

Around 200 people flocked to the Heart of England Kite Day at Lavender Hall Park, in Balsall Common, near Solihull, yesterday, with the colourful kites perfectly set against a clear blue sky.

The annual event, organised by Solihull Council, provided the chance for experienced enthusiasts and novices alike to try their hand at flying kites.

Visitors were able to bring their own kites or buy, or even make them on the day.

Event coordinator David Buckland, from Midland Kites, said: "We have had about 40 kites in the air at any one time, including a few very large ones of 40 feet or more. But although it was a lovely day, the wind was very poor which makes it very hard work."

Mr Buckland, who has been flying kites all his life, and has been a member of Midland Kites for about six years, said a popular attraction on the day was a workshop where children could build their own kites.

As well as the kite-flying, there was also a host of other entertainment, including a brass band concert, children's fairground rides, park ranger activities and refreshment stalls.
