Blind date wedding contest to return

A BIRMINGHAM radio station has launched another controversial blind-date wedding competition.

BRMB's Two Strangers and a Wedding 2 competition will seek two strangers who are prepared to be married without having met before.

Four grooms and four brides will be picked at auditions on January 14 and 15 and listeners will choose the final couple.

Carla Germaine and Greg Cordell were the winners of the first competition who married in 1999. The marriage made headlines around the world, but brought condemnation from church leaders.

It lasted just three months before the couple split.

Today, breakfast show presenter Elliott Webb, who hosted the first event, said: "I don't think Two Strangers and a Wedding has ever really gone away. On a regular basis we are asked about Greg and Carla, and the story appears every time weddings are in the news.

"This is seven years on and I suppose there was an 'itch' to do it again.

Colleague Caroline Martin said: "Having presented advice shows on BRMB I know how high a priority the whole issue of marriage is with our listeners.

"Our research for this event has shown that marriage is under terrible pressure in the UK for a whole host of reasons.

"Civil weddings have massively overtaken Church weddings, fewer and fewer people in their 20s are getting married than ever before, and for some couples it now makes more financial sense not to marry.

"We'll be promoting marriage. Not only will we find a compatible couple but we'll take away the pain of the cost of the marriage and support their lifestyle for a year."

Carla, a 23-year-old model from Sutton Coldfield, and Greg, a 28-year-old security guard of Amington, Tamworth, married in a civil ceremony at the Hyatt Hotel, in Birmingham. They won a honeymoon in the Bahamas, a year's use of a car and rent-free accommodation in a plush apartment.

The couple parted following claims that Greg had an affair with a dental nurse just days after returning from honeymoon.

Since 2003 Carla has been happily married to radio presenter Jezza Kyle, who was working at BRMB at the time of her first marriage.
