'Racist' BNP website closed down

A NEWLY-elected BNP councillor's website has been shut down by Black Country council chiefs because of alleged racist remarks.

Former teacher Simon Smith was elected to Sandwell Council last month when he attracted almost 50 per cent of the vote for the Great Bridge ward.

But he has already fallen foul of council monitoring officers, who today confirmed that his official website was currently suspended.

Neeraj Sharma, the council's head of legal services, said in a statement: "We can confirm that Coun Simon Smith's official website is currently suspended because of concerns relating to the content of the website and this is being investigated.

"We have concerns that the contents were contrary to the acceptable use policy which is applied to all councillors' official websites."

The website was closed down after a member of staff on the local authority complained about its contents to monitoring officers.

A reader, who asked not to be named, told the Mail that Coun Smith, who lives at Thompson Gardens, Smeth-wick, had alleged that the council's planning regime was being abused by Asians.

He also allegedly wrote that Asians were "taking over the country" and his job was to stop them and represent white England.

Coun Smith refused to comment, but former Dudley BNP councillor Simon Darby, the party's West Midlands regional organiser and deputy national leader, accused the ruling Labour party of playing Big Brother.

He said: "Simon Smith has his own views but he is entitled to his opinions. He has earned the right to have his views heard - he received 45 per cent of the vote last month.

"He may have made comments relating to immigration on the website but within reason you should be able to say what you want."
