Tobin eyes double medal haul

ROBERT Tobin is confident he can emerge from this weekend's European Indoor Championships in Birmingham with two medals.

The European Under-23 400 metres champion is adamant he can succeed in both the individual race and the 4x400m relay at the National Indoor Arena now he has overcome injury.

The 23-year-old is one of a new exciting young breed of British one-lap runners who is at ease with the expectation ahead of the championships where he will be one of the favourites to challenge defending champion David Gillick of Ireland.

"I decided to come here because I want to win medals and for no other reason," said Tobin, adamant he has the ability to emulate the career of Olympic silver medallist Roger Black.

"That's my main aim - to win an individual one and also in the relay.

"Gillick is ranked number one in Europe and he has run under 46 seconds this year - he'll be the one to beat.

"But this will be a great experience and I'm not bothered about being one of the favourites.

"If I want to win medals and continue coming up with the goods, I've got to learn to be able to deal with any sort of pressure."

Eager to look ahead to what he believes will be a lengthy track career, he revealed his ambitions to be on the podium at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Basingstoke athlete is looking to at least reach the final at both this year's World Championships in Osaka, Japan, and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing before greater success in London.

"My main aim this summer is to make the final and next year to also make the Olympic final - but finish higher up in the placings," Tobin continued.

"By 2012 I want to be be winning medals and I do believe I have the ability to do that. It's very exciting thinking about what I can achieve."

Defending 60m champion Jason Gardener, who is chasing his fourth successive European title, has had welcome assistance in his contingency plans if he has to return home for the birth of his second child.

Gardener's wife Nancy is expecting the baby on Saturday - the same day Gardener starts his title defence in the qualifying rounds.

The Olympic 4x100m relay gold medallist is adamant that should his wife go into labour, he will return home immediately after the heats, then travel back to the midlands for Sunday's final.

The 'Bath Bullet' was delighted when car manufacturer Lexus after hearing of his predicament, stepped in to help sort out him commuting up-and-down the M6.

He said: "They've given me a brand new RX400 Hybrate 4x4 car, which is of course also environmentally friendly.

"Obviously I am having to play things for the moment by ear, but rest assured once my qualifiers are out of the road, if the birth gets under way, I'll be racing back home.

"This will make things so much easier if I have to rush back and see Nancy.

"I'm extremely grateful to Lexus for this act of kindness - I never imagined they would be so generous in helping me out."
