Animal shooting holidays slammed

Mar 19 2007

HUNTING holidays organised by a Midland firm which offer gun enthusiasts the chance to shoot wild deer and goats in the UK have been branded "morally incomprehensible".

Field sports company UK Custom Shop of Bromsgrove provides its clients with short breaks, hunting six species of wild deer as well as feral goats.

On its website it claims to offer the shooting trips for "a range of abilities" across England and Wales.

The RSPCA, which opposes shooting animals for sport, said it was concerned about inexperienced people shooting animals.

RSPCA spokeswoman Becky Hawkes said: "The RSPCA is concerned that people who are not experienced in dispatching animals humanely could sign up to this morally incomprehensible form of trophy 'tourism'.

"If the goats are not shot cleanly and quickly, it could lead to the animals suffering unnecessarily, which is both unacceptable and illegal."

Andrew Banner, who runs UK Custom Shop said: "This is nothing new, the details have been on the website for the past seven years with no complaints.

"The shoots take place on private estates with permission and everybody who takes part must be correctly licensed.

"It is no different to culling rabbits or pigeons."

Some of the shoots are understood to take place in Snowdonia, North Wales, where official wild goat culls are carried out by the Countryside Council for Wales and the National Trust in a bid to control numbers.
