Muslim party in posters denial

May 25 2007

A MUSLIM political party has distanced itself from a rash of offensive posters that have sprung up in Birmingham.

The radical group Hizb-ut-Tahrir Britain, which translates as The Party of the Liberation, has condemned the fly-posting in Alum Rock, saying it has no link to the propaganda distressing local people.

The Saltley Gate Peace Group has hit out at the posters which are littering phone boxes, lampposts and street signs in Alum Rock Road and Coventry Road.

Many of the yellow stickers have the words "Muslims to rise against British oppression".

Adam Yosef, who chairs the Saltley Gate Peace Group, claimed similar material had been fly-posted in the past by groups such as Al-Muhajiroun and Hizb-ut-Tahrir Britain.

But Dr Imran Waheed, a spokesman for Hizb-ut-Tahrir Britain, said: "We have no link whatsoever to the material that has been fly-posted in Birmingham.

"We believe that the posting of such material damages community relations and does nothing to create harmony between the city's residents.

"In Birmingham our activists work in the local community, encouraging the people of Birmingham to speak out against injustice and oppression at home or abroad through peaceful political means.

"In the UK, our work with the Muslim community is focused on directing Muslims to make a positive contribution to society, whilst preserving their Islamic identity."

Dr Waheed claimed the group had never fly-posted material in the city, but had merely handed out leaflets after Friday prayers at mosques.
