Tolkien giant to stalk suburb

Feb 27 2007

How the Treebeard statue in Moseley village might look.

AN ICONIC 20ft stainless steel statute to celebrate Birmingham's links with Lord of the Ring's creator JRR Tolkien is set to get the green light.

The giant Ent Treebeard, a walking tree creature from the classic fantasy story, could soon be strolling across Moseley village green.

It has been designed by the Moseley Statue Group, part of the local business association, to draw tourists and Lord of the Rings fans to the area.

And will link to the city's Tolkien trail, the series of sites, such as Sarehole Mill, from Tolkien's childhood in Birmingham which inspired his stories.

In a further link the statue, which will be sturdy stainless steel to make it vandal-proof, has been designed by the author's great nephew, metalwork sculptor Tim Tolkien.

Birmingham's planning committee has been recommended by officers to approve the statue at its meeting on Thursday.

David Isgrove, of the Statue Group said: "It has been a long journey, with many revisions to the plan."
