Teenager spat at Metro ticket collector

A TEENAGER verbally abused a Midland Metro ticket controller and then spat in her face, a court heard. The yob then fled but was tracked down after his victim had the presence of mind to collect his DNA on a swab. Judge Phillip Gregory, sitting at Birmingham Crown Court, told Jerome Blake that his conduct had been "vile". He said Blake richly deserved custody but he instead ordered him to do 100 hours unpaid work. The judge also ordered Blake to remain under curfew for the next four months and to pay £500 compensation to his victim. Blake, 18, previously of Ferncliffe Road, Harborne, had previously admitted an offence of common assault and a charge under the Public Order Act. John Brotherton, prosecuting, said Blake and another man got onto the tram at West Bromwich Central. When controller Elle Law asked him for his ticket he became abusive and accused her of being racist. Mr Brotherton said Blake handed over some cash but continued to abuse the woman calling her "ugly, a slag and a whore". He said after he had spat at her the controller used a swab kit to collect a sample of spit. Mr Brotherton added that the victim felt humiliated, distressed and embarrassed. Lawrence Watts, defending, said Blake apologised for his nasty behaviour. |
