'I remember nothing' says Birmingham diabetic death crash driver

Nov 9 2007

By Ross McCarthy, Birmingham Mail

Trevor Clarke

A DIABETIC told a jury he could remember nothing about the fatal accident when his car knocked down a four-year-old boy.

It is alleged that Trevor Clarke was aware that his blood sugar levels were low, but continued to drive before ploughing into the youngster.

Clarke, aged 51, of Larch Walk, Yardley, Birmingham, has denied causing the death of Cory Chesielski by dangerous driving.

The plumber told Birmingham Crown Court he had suffered from hypoglycaemic attacks in the past and was usually aware of them because he would start to sweat.

But in 1997 he suffered an attack when his legs had given way, and had not been aware that it was about to happen.

Clarke said that on April 13 last year he went out making charity collections, initially going to Dudley.

During the course of the morning he ate on a number of occasions and also checked his blood sugar level.

He had not felt uncomfortable or ill.

"The next thing I can remember is coming to rest against the house. I then remember the side window smashing and bump.

"I knew something serious had happened and I went automatically for my glucose tablets.

"I knew I had been involved in an accident but I could not remember anything about it."

Tim Green, prosecuting, said that before the accident witnesses had seen Clarke driving in an erratic and dangerous way for about two miles.

He said in Cartland Road, Stirchley, Clarke's Renault swerved off the road, collided with Cory, who was on the pavement, before ending up in a garden.
