Casino hit by ram raiders

RAM raiders used a stolen truck to smash their way straight through a brick wall into a Birmingham casino.

The seven and a half tonne flatbed lorry ploughed through a rear wall of the Midland Wheel casino, in Egbaston, sending shockwaves through the building.

As the dust settled two masked men, wearing balaclavas, clambered through the rubble-strewn hole and confronted a male cashier in an office.

They scooped up banknotes before fleeing with a substantial haul of cash in the raid at 10.50pm on Sunday.

A city-wide man-hunt has now been launched for the 'hole in the wall' gang.

Detectives said the white Iveco lorry, registration number L824 HCP, had been stolen from an industrial yard in Redfern Road, Tyseley, 30 minutes before the raid.

Police recovered the truck and forensics specialists have now combed the cab for vital clues about who may have been behind the wheel.

A number of gamblers were in the club at the time, and would have felt the shudder as the vehicle smashed through the brickwork.

Repair work has already been carried out to the damage at the private members club on the junction of Edgbaston Road and Norfolk Road.

Det Chief Insp Gary Campbell, from Rose Road police, said: "The truck, which had been stolen shortly before, was reversed into a rear wall of the casino.

"Two men entered an office in the premises and demanded money from a male member of staff. He was unharmed but clearly shaken.

"I would appeal for anyone with information to contact police."

No weapons were seen and no one was injured. The offenders escaped in another vehicle which was parked nearby.

* Anyone who saw the Iveco lorry prior to the robbery or has information can contact the robbery team at Rose Road police on 0845 113 5000.
