Trams hit by bridge crash

Oct 6 2005

By Tony Deeley, Birmingham Mail

MIDLAND Metro tram services were disrupted today after the second accident in three days at the same Midland bridge.

Passengers travelling between Birmingham and Wolverhampton faced delays as tram drivers were ordered to slow down after a lorry struck the bridge.

The incident happened at Great Bridge Road, Bilston, about 9.15 am and the lorry toppled on its side.

Metro officials ordered tram drivers to slow down at the spot while checks were carried out by engineers to ensure the bridge was safe. Efforts were being made by firefighters, police and salvage crews to recover the lorry and clear the road.

It is believed the driver suffered only minor injuries in the accident, which followed a similar incident on Monday in which a lorry got wedged under the same bridge, halting tram services for two hours.

A Midland Metro spokesman said today: "A lorry struck the bridge and landed on is side. We had the bridge checked out by engineers who assured us it was structurally sound. No trams were cancelled but drivers were ordered to slow down until the all clear was given."

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We are working with recovery services to put the lorry back on its wheels."
