MP breaks up fight between colleagues

Nov 10 2005

By Jonathan Walker, Birmingham Mail

A BLACK Country MP had to break up a fight between two MPs in the the middle of the House of Commons.

Tom Watson, Labour MP for West Bromwich East, stepped in between two Labour colleagues to prevent a shoving match turning into something worse.

Mr Watson is a Government whip, making him one of Tony Blair's enforcers.

Over the past week he has been busy trying to convince Labour MPs to support the Government over controversial terrorism legislation.

But he had to intervene to protect one of the Government's biggest critics.

The incident involved MPs Jim Dowd (Lewisham West), who was loyally supporting Mr Blair, and Bob Marshall-Andrews (Medway), one of the rebels.

Eyewitnesses say Mr Marshall-Andrews insulted Mr Dowd in the Members' Lobby of the House of Commons, where MPs congregate between votes.

One said: "There was a scuffle. Tom Watson had to step in and break it up.

"The whips are supposed to keep order among their MPs, but it doesn't usually get as physical as this."
