It's Jerm warfare!

Jan 30 2005

By Graham Hill, Sunday Mercury

Bryan Robson last night blasted the penalty decision that put Albion's F.A. Cup dreams on hold.

And he believed Albion should have been awarded a spot-kick at the other end as Spurs earned a replay in two weeks' time with a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.

The Albion boss was unhappy with referee Mark Halsey who awarded a spot-kick when Jermain Defoe went down under Darren Purse's challenge in the Baggies 18-yard box.

Robson hinted that Defoe dived as he insisted that Purse did not touch the Spurs striker.

Defoe picked himself up to score from the spot and he was subjected to "cheat" chants from Baggies fans after that. Albion were 1-0 up at the time thanks to a Rob Earnshaw goal and they looked in control of the game before the equaliser.

"I'm pleased with the performance, but again I'm complaining about a penalty decision," said Robson, who saw his side hit the woodwork twice.

"Darren Purse said he never touched him. Then one of the Spurs centre halves grabbed Earnshaw by the shirt in front of

goal and knocked him off balance. We deserved to win." But Spurs boss and former Albion player Martin Jol defended Defoe: " Jermain is not a diver, he doesn't do it in training and wouldn't go down without a challenge. I used to practice it 20 years ago, but today there are too many cameras!"

Albion have signed Manchester United midfielder Keiran Richardson on loan until the end of the season, but Robson is waiting for news on Burnley's Richard Chaplow after making a third offer for the player late on Friday evening.
