Striker vows to fight for his Baggies spot

Jan 30 2005

Sunday Mercury

Geoff Horsfield has revealed that he wants a new contract at The Hawthorns and is desperate to help them to survive - despite the arrival of Kevin Campbell.

But Horsfield, a cult hero at Baggies, last started a Premiership fixture 27 days ago against Newcastle and has pledged his future to Albion even though he has found himself on the substitutes' bench in recent weeks.

In fact, the former Blues star has yet to score since Bryan Robson arrived at the club to replace Gary Megson.

Horsfield, 31, has top-flight experience with Birmingham, but he has managed to score only two goals so far this season from 19 appearances - although many of those have been as a substitute.

The strapping centre-forward has been linked with a move to Championship clubs such as Leeds, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest - with Burnley now thought to be interested as part of the proposed Richard Chaplow deal - but he is adamant he is going nowhere.

"I am happy here and I really want to sign a new contract," said Horsfield. "I have got 18 months left so I don't know what is happening as yet.

"I will just have to see what occurs and I don't really want to be going into the Championship again. If the gaffer or the club decide to sell me then I will have to look at it when it comes.

"But, as far as I am concerned, I am staying here and I want to keep us up."

Horsfield came off the bench to set up Ronnie Wallwork for the second goal in their crucial 2-0 win against Manchester City last week.

But he insists he does not want to suffer from splinters and is itching for a starting place in Robson's first team.

"It's not nice when you're not playing and if you ask any players they will tell

you that they want to play every game," he said. "That is the same for me. The gaffer has been starting with Rob Earnshaw, Kanu and Kevin Campbell.

"Kevin has been fantastic - he is a great pro and is a good player who works really hard as well. He is going to be an asset for us and we need to get on a roll of results. "I have only scored two this season, but most of the time I have been on the bench, which I am disappointed about.

"I am not going to whine and whinge and bang the gaffer's door down, as that is his decision. All I can do is give my all in training and when I come on to the pitch."

Baggies face a tough test of their credentials against fellow strugglers Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

Albion trail fourth-from-bottom Palace by five points and it is a must-win game for Robson's boys.

They will be looking for revenge - the Eagles hammered Albion 3-0 when the two sides met at Selhurst Park in October, which proved to be Megson's final game in charge.

It was a shambolic end to their former manager's reign and chief tormentor was the former Blues star, Andrew Johnson.

The jet-heeled striker scored two goals and led the Baggies back line a merry dance all afternoon.

Horsfield partnered Johnson at St Andrew's and is well aware of his capabilities. He knows that Darren Purse and company will have to be in top form to blank out the Palace man.

"He has come on by leaps and bounds since I played with him at Birmingham," said Horsfield.

"Steve Bruce let him go at Blues when he was young and he obviously thought that Clinton Morrison was going to be the better player.

"But Johnson has improved and hats off to Iain Dowie who has been fantastic and seems to have both improved and matured him as a player. It isn't just the fact that he is scoring goals but it is his all-round game and he is working hard.

"You could see his potential at Blues as he was lightning-quick, but he didn't work as hard in those days and he would be the first to admit that.

"He is getting his goals now and looks as though he is really enjoying his football.

"I definitely think he is due an England call-up as he is second in the Premiership goalscorers' list - only two behind Thierry Henry who is one of the best strikers in the world.

"It is no easy feat getting to 14 Premiership goals and I think he will reach 20 by the end of the campaign.

"On current form, he is one of the best strikers in England and he is playing in a side that is in the bottom four, which just proves how well he is doing.

"He hangs on the shoulders of defenders and is really lively. Purse has played against him many times and knows what he is like and Neil Clement knows him so they should be aware of his threat.

"We are going to have to be honest professionals and try to stop his goal threat."

Horsfield also admitted that the first League win under Robson had lifted spirits at The Hawthorns.

"It doesn't matter what people say but confidence is always low if you aren't winning," he confessed.

"We have a great set of lads at West Brom and the banter in the dressing room is great, but if you aren't getting the results on the pitch then everyone seems to be on a downer when you come to training on a Monday morning." ian.clarkson@mrn.co.uk
