Baggies 2 Man City 0 Jubilant Bryan Robson recorded a richly deserved first Premiership win as Albion manager on a pulsating night at The Hawthorns. After 12 attempts, Robson can finally pocket three points and Albion now have renewed hope that they can avoid the drop. New striker Kevin Campbell made himself an instant hero and Ronnie Wallwork came in from the cold to secure victory in a thrilling clash. Albion had gone 15 games without a win, leaving them rock bottom, but Robson collected triumph that will live long in the memory. And those difficult days when Robson had to win over sections of the Albion fans as well as try and keep the club in the Premiership, seemed a long way off. It was a night of firsts. Campbell, on his home debut, has a hatful of goals to his name in a long career. But few will have given him as much pleasure as the fifth minute strike that put Albion ahead. And Wallwork, frozen out by previous boss Gary Megson, scored his first ever goal for Albion to cap off an excellent display. Wallwork played for Manchester United and was a boyhood Reds supporter, and when Robson coached at Old Trafford after leaving Middlesbrough, he spotted his capabilities. And that faith was rewarded when he made victory safe with nine minutes left. Now Robson will want to build on this as the misery of the last-gasp defeat at Fulham seven days ago was wiped out after seeing their closest rivals pick up points. And Campbell believes there is enough quality in the Albion side to stay up against all the odds. The goals were quality and with the fighting spirit weve got here, well make it a real scrap right to the end, said the former Everton and Arsenal forward. Were now playing the teams around us and we couldnt ask for a better month. Hopefully, we can find out whos going to end up where and we can be within touching distance of getting out of the bottom three. Its also great to get my first goal of the season. Wallwork has been at Albion for two and a half years, but this was his first goal for the club. He had no future at The Hawthorns under Megson, but is now one of Robsons key men. We had to dig in. We saw the results before the game and just made sure went out there to get the win, said Wallwork. Im delighted for the manager, hes come in and done well but we needed to build on what wed been doing. Albion were certainly reminded just how vital this game was when they saw the Saturday afternoon results before their 5.15 kick-off. Wins for Crystal Palace and Southampton, and an amazing 4-4 draw for Norwich, meant the pressure was right back on them Robsons men made a perfect start, yet they could have been a goal down after just 40 seconds. Shaun Wright-Phillips raided down the right and his cross was met by Antoine Sibierski who shot narrowly wide from 10 yards out after taking one touch too many. But Baggies responded in excellent style. Martin Albrechtsen was looking dangerous on Albions right, and when he collected a superb ball from Zoltan Gera after five minutes, Baggies took full advantage. Albrechtsens cross was met by Campbell who met the ball first time under pressure to fire home. It was a goal that sent the Albion faithful wild with delight after so much had gone against Robsons side in recent weeks. Baggies looked confident going forward with Rob Earnshaw pouncing on a long kick from keeper Russell Hoult before shooting wide of the far post. The Dane Albrechtsen was looking impressive at both ends of the park. After 38 minutes, he raced away after referee Graham Poll had played the advantage despite a foul on Gera. Albrechtsen crossed for Wallwork, but his shot sailed over the bar. Albrechtensen then twice got in to foil City in the Baggies area. After the break, Robson took off Earn-shaw in a move that clearly did not go down well with the clubs record signing. Earnshaw was caught on camera apparently swearing under his breath as he came off to be replaced by Geoff Horsfield - but Robson justified his actions later and accused the Wales striker of being a passenger. Albion came close to extending their lead in spectacular fashion after 63 minutes though as Jonathan Greening produced a 20-yard effort that had to be brilliantly tipped over the bar by England keeper David James. But the determined Wallwork was rewarded for his efforts with nine minutes left with a goal that gave Baggies some much-needed breathing space. Campbell found Greening on the left and his cross was met by Horsfield at the far post. He headed the ball back perfectly for Wallwork to stoop low and head home. There was controversy at the other end though when Citys Paul Bosvelt appeared to have pulled one back from a free-kick with a 20-yard screamer. But Poll disallowed the effort for taking the kick too quickly. STAR MAN: Ronnie Wallwork |
