Moseley maul 'The Club'

Jan 23 2005

MOSELEY 39 BLACKHEATH 10

They may call themselves The Club but Blackheath were well and truly clubbed by promotion-chasing Moseley.

In a scintillating first-half performance, the Bournbrook side shredded the visitors’ defence with three tries in the first 15 minutes and four by the break.

The opening quarter was vintage stuff from Moseley who cannot have played as well since their days in National One.

Their forwards overpowered the Londoners’ pack and their backs ran angles Blackheath simply could not pick up.

It was the perfect response to last week’s disappointing 16-10 loss at Wharfedale and one which made head coach Ian Smith purr with pride.

He said: “We looked at the videos against Wharfedale and to be honest we did some good things but we just failed to take our chances.

“We created enough opportunities only for things to go wrong, but today in the first 25 minutes nothing went wrong.”

The rout was started by fly-half Ollie Thomas with a second-minute penalty and continued by bulky winger James Aston.

With only four minutes on the clock Thomas took a quick tap penalty, flanker David Hunt drew the visitors’ last defender and offloaded to give Aston an easy run-in.

Thomas missed with a conversion but the floodgates were already open.

After nine minutes Moseley drove a line-out close to the Blackheath line and, with the defence in tatters, Thomas dummied his way under the posts. His conversion made it 15-0.

Blackheath responded with their only attack of the half as Hunt was whistled for killing the ball, presenting Steve McCashin with a penalty he could not miss.

It was only a blip as lock Richard Stott claimed a line-out ball which was then spun to Andy Binns who cut into the Heath’s defence.

The captain raced to within a couple of yards of the try-line before giving Alistair Bressington the simple task of dotting down.

Thomas’ conversion made it 22-3. Moseley were made to wait for the all-important fourth try until just before the interval when Aston broke into the visitors’ 22 only to be halted by Chris Trace.

But the Blackheath full-back failed to roll off and was yellow-carded, giving Moseley a one-man advantage.

They exploited their superiority seconds later when Gareth Taylor squirmed over from the base of a ruck. Thomas’s conversion, added to his earlier penalty, made the half-time score 32-3.

The second half lacked the fluency of the first, Moseley scoring only one try, in the 55th minute, when Nathan Bressington flew down the right wing and close to the visitors’ line. Possession was recycled and when it looked as though Taylor would score he was dragged down inches short. But centre Josh Frape capitalised on the scrum-half’s break to collect the pop pass and flop over. Thomas converted.

On 71 minutes Blackheath’s former Wasps winger Shane Roiser scored a try.

SCORERS: Moseley - tries: Aston, Thomas, Bressington, Taylor, Frape; conversions: Thomas (4); penalties: Thomas (2). Blackheath - try: Roiser; conversion: McCashin; penalty: McCashin.
