MP Watson sacked, claims website

Aug 27 2004

By Adam Aspinall, Birmingham Post

A new website has been launched attacking a controversial Midland MP amid allegations he was sacked from a plum political post.

Tom Watson, MP for West Bromwich East, came to prominence earlier this year when his robust campaigning style snatched victory for New Labour in the closely fought Hodge Hill by-election.

Mr Watson blanketed Hodge Hill with thousands of leaflets attacking Lib Dem policies and their choice of candidate, Nicola Davies whom he dubbed 'Nokia Davies' because of her links to the mobile phone company.

But it was the articles on his award winning 'bloggers' website, where he ran a series of headlines such as 'Lib Dem brutes' that most incurred their wrath, and set him up as a hate figure for party members across the country.

Lib Dem supporters barraged his site with abuse for days but have now gone one step further and set-up a spoof website of their own entitled 'Comical Tommy'.

The website ruthlessly mocks the MP's style and encourages members of the public to join in.

Deputy council leader John Hemming, who leads the Liberal Democrat group on Birmingham City Council, was unaware of the spoof website but insisted it was not condoned by anyone within the party.

He said: "I am all in favour of the internet allowing people to get more access to knowledge, but you can't always trust what you read on there."

Mr Watson has just returned from holiday after being hand-picked by Downing Street to co-ordinate the upcoming Hartlepool by-election, which is needed to find a replacement for Peter Mandelson, who has been appointed the new Commissioner for Trade at the European Commission.

Sources within the Liberal Democrats claimed that Mr Watson was removed from the project for distasteful remarks he made about heroin addicts, but it is a claim Mr Watson and the Labour Party deny.

Mr Watson said: "Nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately it's the price you pay for success."

A Labour spokesman also denied the rumours that he had been sacked.

"Mr Watson was asked to come up for one week but ended up staying for three," he said. "It was never our intention for him to stay throughout the duration of the campaign."
